24-year-old Ty Jackson, a resident of Palm Coast’s S Section, was arrested on Saturday for allegedly striking a deputy as the deputy worked to defuse an argument, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office says. Jackson was booked into the county jail on Saturday on charges of nonviolent obstruction and battery on a law enforcement officer, and released the following day on $2,000 bond.
According to the FCSO’s report on the incident, Deputy Evan Bishop and other deputies were called to what was reported as a ‘physical disturbance’ on Palm Coast’s Selma Trail in the S Section. Upon arriving, the deputies reportedly saw four people in the road having an argument.
Bishop is said to have made contact with Jackson, who was reportedly one of the individuals in the road. The FCSO says that Bishop then tried to defuse the heated confrontation, and ordered Jackson to walk to one of the patrol vehicles that was on-scene. Jackson was described as having turned back to yell more into the dispute multiple times, as well as trying to get around Bishop to get back into it with the others.
At this point Bishop reportedly tried to prevent Jackson from re-engaging, leading to him allegedly having his arm swatted at by Jackson. The FCSO says that Bishop then tried to restrain Jackson, who held his arms in front of him preventatively. Another deputy, identified as Rick Stanford, handcuffed Jackson and got him into a patrol vehicle.
All three other individuals at the scene maintained that despite the nature of the initial call, the argument had only been verbal and that no physical altercations had broken out. Only Jackson was arrested out of the group.
“If you batter a Deputy Sheriff, you’ll end up in jail. It’s as simple as that,” said Sheriff Rick Staly about the incident. “Our deputies were trying to do their job and defuse a disturbance before it became more serious, but this guy could not control his temper and got himself a trip to the [county jail] charged with a felony.”
