BUNNELL – A cold weather shelter will be opening Monday to accommodate the low temperatures expected in the evening and into Tuesday. Those who are without heat or are homeless are encouraged by the Flagler County government to make arrangements to stay in the shelter if need be for their own safety and health. The shelter will open at 5:00 pm and remain open until 8:00 am Tuesday morning.
The shelter will be operated by The Sheltering Tree at the Rock Transformation Center on US-1 in Bunnell, formerly known as Church on the Rock. Transportation arrangements will be available for those in need of a ride. The National Weather Service is advising temperatures will be in the high 30’s overnight on Monday, and the area in general is not expected to see a high temperature of 70 degrees or higher for over a week.
“As temperatures approach freezing, serious medical conditions including hypothermia can develop or be exacerbated,” said Flagler County Health and Human Services Director Joseph Hegedus. “We urge those who are unhoused or lack adequate heat at their residences to access the cold-weather shelter. The Sheltering Tree and the Rock Transformation Center will provide cots and meals. Flagler County will be providing transportation to the shelter for those who need it.”
