In a first for Flagler County sheriffs, Rick Staly has been chosen to chair the Florida Commission on Law Enforcement Accreditation. Staly has served on the 15-person board since 2018, and has been its vice chair since 2020. The Commission, known as FCLEA, was established by Florida law to ensure law enforcement agencies are up to standard.

The FCLEA’s members are appointed by the Florida Sheriff’s Association, Florida Police Chief’s Association, and City/County Government Organizations. Staly’s 2018 appointment was made by the Florida Sheriff’s Association.

Meeting three times annually, the FCLEA oversees the process of accreditation, and make their decisions to accredit/re-accredit organizations that come before them. Any law enforcement operation that goes before the board passes a comprehensive review process to ensure that they’re in compliance.

Prior to his appointment to Chair, Sheriff Staly has a 25-year history of being involved with the accreditation process in law enforcement. 177 law enforcement agencies and 38 inspector general offices are accredited with the FCLEA in the state of Florida, with two more agencies having applied to join them.

“This statewide leadership position allows me to ensure that our citizens know that law enforcement in Florida adheres to the highest standards of integrity and professional excellence,” said Sheriff Staly. “I am honored to be elected by my peers on the Commission to serve as the Chair for the Florida Commission on Law Enforcement Accreditation. Being elected to serve as Chair of the Commission allows me the opportunity to ensure Florida law enforcement agencies deliver law enforcement services at the highest standards in professional policing.”
