Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is set to propose the construction of the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library in Miami, the governor’s office announced on Tuesday. If approved and constructed, it would be the first presidential library to be constructed in Florida.
The initiative will be brought forward at the September 30th meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Internal Improvement Trust Fund. DeSantis is set to propose a 2.63-acre parcel of land adjacent to the Freedom Tower on Biscayne Blvd.
“President Trump has achieved results for the American people and made a lasting impact on our nation’s history,” DeSantis said. “No state has better delivered the President’s agenda than the Free State of Florida, and we would be honored to house his presidential library here in his home state.”
President Donald Trump’s ties to Florida are more of a recent development than an origin story. Trump was born in New York City in 1946, and completed his higher education in New York and Pennsylvania. He was most known as a New York real estate investor for most of his professional career, until he relocated to the Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.
There are currently fourteen presidential libraries constructed in the United States. The closest to Florida is the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum in Atlanta, Georgia. Each president from Herbert Hoover through George W. Bush has a library through the National Archives and Records Administration. Most earlier presidents have one outside the NARA. A library is planned for Barack Obama in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, while there has yet to be a firm plan announced for a Joe Biden library.
