The Flagler County Public Works Department is ahead of schedule in completing their Canal Capacity Expansion project, the county said in a statement issued last week. Initially slated for a September 22nd end date, the county now believes work will be done ahead of July 4th.
“The contractor is working ahead of schedule and expects to be completed in the next 6 weeks for a June completion,” said Flagler Road and Bridge Manager Brad Bond. “To date, the project is 94% complete.” According to the county, crews are taking precautions to ensure that pollution and environmental impact is addressed, and that regulations are followed at the federal, state, and local level.
In the project, county public works employees are cleaning and reshaping two canals on the west side of Flagler County. One is the canal that runs along CR-302, starting east of the intersection with CR-15 and working west to the end of Canal Ave (the same roadway as CR-302) where it meets Water Oak Rd. The other is the canal that runs along Santana Lane, from CR-305 at the east end to Avocado Blvd at the west end.

Once work is complete, the canals will be cleaned of sediment and debris, with regrading done to promote free and unobstructed drainage flow. They’ll additionally be reshaped to attempt to keep out obstructive materials. At the CR-302 and CR-65 box culvert, desilting operations were conducted plus debris removal, with regrading and ditch stabilization around the area of the drainage structure.
“With the winding down of the project, the public should be aware of the potential for intermittent traffic delays on County Road 302 for site restoration efforts,” Bond continued. “We appreciate the cooperation and patience we’ve received from residents. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate so we can reach the finish line ahead of schedule.”
