Flagler School Board member Derek Barrs has submitted his letter of resignation to Gov. Ron DeSantis as he awaits confirmation to become Administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Barrs was selected by President Donald Trump to serve as a key figure in the U.S. Department of Transportation, and is considered highly likely to receive confirmation by the U.S. Senate this month.
Barrs’ resignation is effective September 30th. His term expires at the 2026 election cycle, meaning Gov. DeSantis will need to appoint a successor to fill out his term. Barrs, 51, was himself appointed in October 2024 earlier this year after Sally Hunt resigned her seat the previous month. He had run for election to a different seat that cycle, but was beaten by Janie Ruddy in August.
“Serving Flagler Schools has been an extraordinary chapter of my public service life,” Barrs said in his resignation letter, per Flagler Schools. “From working alongside dedicated educators, staff and board members, to supporting our outstanding teachers and administrators,I have deeply valued the spirit of Children First, fostering Trust and Respect for All and striving to Empower Others.”
Prior to being appointed to the Flagler School Board, Barrs held various positions in law enforcement. From 1991 to 2001 he was a deputy with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. He joined the Florida Department of Transportation in 2001, eventually rising to the rank of law enforcement chief in Florida Highway Patrol by 2017. His law enforcement career concluded in 2020.
“We are grateful for Mr. Barrs’ service to the students and families of Flagler Schools,” said Flagler Superintendent LaShakia Moore. “His time on the board reflected a strong commitment to collaboration and keeping students at the center of every decision. We wish him the very best as he continues his service at the national level.”
