The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office is pursuing charges against a deputy accused of accidentally shooting a young boy last year. Master Deputy Bryan Jackson is said to have grazed the 11-year-old while he was inside his home, as Jackson was target shooting with an agency rifle.

While the FCSO pursues charges against Jackson, he’s been removed from law enforcement duties and kept on board to work in an administrative capacity. Once Jackson’s criminal case is resolved, the FCSO plans to launch an internal investigation to determine whether Jackson violated agency policies.

On August 27, 2025, the incident occurred at Jackson’s property in Daytona North. He was said to be using a rifle recently issued to his daughter, newly sworn in Deputy Kailen Jackson. He reportedly told a deputy that one of the shots he fired wound up entering a nearby home, where it hit the boy as he was playing video games.

An investigation into the shooting has been ongoing since it occurred. The FCSO is presently pursuing a misdemeanor charge of culpable negligence against Jackson.

“This was a very thorough and comprehensive investigation that took time and included a recreation of the incident and a forensic firearm analysis by FBI experts in Quantico, Va.,” said FCSO Chief of Staff Mark Strobridge. “As with any case, Master Deputy Jackson is entitled to due process, and the facts in this case and any formal charges against him will be decided by the State Attorney’s Office.”

In a phone interview Friday, Strobridge said further review will determine whether it was against policy for one deputy to allow another to use an agency-issued firearm while off-duty. In the meantime, he says he trusts Jackson to perform his administrative job duties even as his employer works to prosecute him.

”As with every employee we have, the answer is yes, [we trust Jackson],” Strobridge said. “It’s absolutely positively yes.” In the meantime, Jackson has no law enforcement responsibility or authority. He will not have access to the agency’s case against him, Strobridge says.
