One of the best things about living in or visiting Flagler County is how much of the area’s appeal costs nothing. Free parking at the beaches, free trail access, free events — here’s how to fill an entire weekend without spending a dollar.
1. Walk any beach in Flagler County
Unlike much of Florida, parking is free at virtually every beach access point in the area, from MalaCompra Park to Varn Park to the heart of Flagler Beach. Bring a towel, a thermos, and a book — that’s the whole afternoon.
2. Hike the Lehigh Trail
Eight-plus miles of paved, multi-use trail through pine flatwoods and wetlands, with several access points around Palm Coast. Perfect for walking, running, or biking, and you’ll likely see deer, gopher tortoises, and a long list of birds.
3. Explore Princess Place Preserve
The 1,500-acre preserve at the confluence of Pellicer Creek and the Matanzas River is free to visit. Hiking trails, the historic 1880s-era homestead, and one of the most peaceful river views in the county.
4. First Friday in Flagler Beach
The first Friday of each month, downtown Flagler Beach hosts live music, classic cars, vendors, kids’ activities, and pet events at Veterans Park from 6 to 9 p.m. Free to attend, family-friendly, and one of the most local things on the calendar.
5. Watch the sunrise at the Hammock
Drive A1A north toward Marineland before dawn. Pull off at any public access. The combination of low development and clean horizon makes Flagler County one of the best East Coast sunrise spots that nobody talks about.
6. Birdwatch the St. Joe Walkway
Part of the Great Florida Birding Trail, this paved path connects to Linear Park and the Intracoastal trail system. Over 200 bird species pass through the area annually — bald eagles, pelicans, herons, and roseate spoonbills among them.
7. Tour the Bulow Plantation Ruins
Admission to Bulow Plantation Ruins Historic State Park is just a few dollars per car (and free if you walk or bike in). The ruins of an 1800s sugar mill, hiking trails, and kayak access along Bulow Creek make this one of the best history-meets-nature stops in the county.
8. Browse the Gallery of Local Art (GOLA)
The downtown Flagler Beach gallery is free to walk through and showcases work from dozens of local artists. A great rainy-day stop and a low-pressure way to support the local arts scene.
9. Visit the Flagler Beach Farmers Market
Held every Friday, the market draws vendors, food trucks, and live music to downtown Flagler Beach. Browsing is free; sampling the local produce, honey, and baked goods is the price of admission.
10. Catch a free concert at Central Park
The City of Palm Coast’s Central Park in Town Center hosts a regular concert series, plus seasonal events like Arbor Day, Touch-a-Truck, and the new Beats & Eats food truck and music nights. Always free, always family-friendly.
