Tropical Storm Helene Sparks State of Emergency for Flagler, Volusia Counties

Flagler and Volusia counties have been placed under a state of emergency in preparation for Tropical Storm Helene, the storm system that formed over the Gulf of Mexico in recent days. Its path will likely take it north toward the Florida panhandle, but effects may well be felt around the state.

61 different counties in Florida have been placed under a state of emergency by Gov. Ron DeSantis, sparing only six. Other surrounding counties such as Seminole, Lake, Putnam, and St. Johns are also under the emergency declaration.

By the time Helene makes landfall on Florida’s Gulf Coast, estimated to be Thursday, it is forecast to be a major hurricane by the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The resulting storm surge and winds may pose a threat to safety and property later this week, though northeast Florida likely won’t bear the worst of the effects. Data from the NOAA’s National Hurricane Center predicts the southern tip of Florida will begin feeling Helene’s winds by Wednesday afternoon, with the panhandle being hit sometime Thursday.

Local Outlook

“It is important not to focus on the hurricane cone, as impacts are possible outside of the cone,” said Flagler County Emergency Management Director Jonathan Lord. “Therefore, just in case this system has impacts on Flagler County later this week, it is a good idea for you to take time now to review how you will protect your home and your family and update your emergency supply kits. It’s never too early to ensure that you are prepared, which includes checking to see if you live in a potential hurricane evacuation zone.”

As of Tuesday afternoon, the following locations have been listed by the Volusia County Emergency Management Department for sandbag collection. Flagler County defers to local businesses who sell sandbags for a hefty sum, after having previously offered them at no cost to residents as Volusia County does.
