Billionaire attorney John Morgan on Wednesday announced the title of his new political party. The party was the subject of a naming contest, leading to ‘The Common Ground Party’ to be chosen as the winner.

Morgan described his initiative as “a party that sits in the middle, that’s willing to compromise and wants to get things done”. Members of this new party will be called ‘Grounders’, Morgan says.

The naming contest for Morgan’s new political party promised a $100,000 reward for the submission of the winning name. Because over 250 people independently submitted ‘The Common Ground Party’, Morgan says those winners will split the prize money.

“Whether this works or not, I don’t know,” Morgan said. “But it’s worth a try to undo the gridlock, the hate, and all of the meanness that has fallen into politics on all sides.”

Morgan announced that efforts would soon begin to register voters into his new party. It’s not yet clear whether the party will be operating solely in Florida or on a larger scale. No platform has been announced either as of Wednesday.

As of 2026, state Senator Jason Pizzo is Florida’s only elected official at the state or federal level not affiliated with either the Democratic or Republican parties. Formerly a Democrat, Pizzo switched to Independent in 2025. He’s currently running in the 2026 Florida gubernatorial election.

John Morgan rose to prominence as the founder of the Morgan & Morgan law firm. Headquartered in Orlando, Morgan & Morgan has expanded into a prominent national firm since its founding in 1988.

In the political realm, Morgan is a longtime fundraiser for the Democratic Party. He was a major player in the push for the legalization of medical cannabis in Florida, which came to pass in 2016. In 2020 Morgan was a major contributor to the successful campaign to raise Florida’s minimum wage to $15 via ballot amendment.
