The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that occurred Sunday in Palm Coast’s B Section, the agency announced on social media. The suspect in this case was also the shooting victim; 33-year-old Michael McDonald was shot after allegedly breaking into the home of an acquaintance.

According to the FCSO’s statement, the incident occurred shortly before 2:00 p.m. at a residence on Big Bear Lane in Palm Coast’s B Section. McDonald is accused of entering the home of a former acquaintance and her two children.

McDonald is said to have opened the house’s garage door before walking around to a back window. After apparently banging on it, McDonald reportedly came back to the front door and entered the home.

Once inside, the FCSO says McDonald confronted and threatened the occupant and her kids. The mother was described as having told McDonald to leave, or else he’d be shot. The encounter came to a head when the mother fired one round and struck McDonald’s arm, the FCSO says.

After the shooting, McDonald is said to have driven his silver Kia SUV to AdventHealth’s Palm Coast Parkway hospital. Deputies found him there and detained him. He was then taken inside to receive treatment for his injuries.

Neither the mother nor her two children were injured, the FCSO says. After being released from the hospital McDonald was taken to the county jail. He’s been charged with burglary with assault.
