Daytona Beach Mother Indicted in Death of Teen Son

ⓒ Volusia County Branch Jail

A mother in Daytona Beach has been charged with three felonies in the killing of her teenage son last month. 43-year-old Talia Nelson is already being held at the Volusia County Branch Jail on no bond.

Nelson’s 14-year-old son Zakye was reported to have died on January 1st of this year, after being found by emergency responders. He’s said to have weighed just 33 pounds at the time of his death, which was determined to have been from malnourishment. He reportedly had bed sores on his body as well at the time of being found. The incident took place at 112 Carolina Lake Drive, in the Carolina Club apartment complex near Dunn Ave and Williamson Blvd.

As of Tuesday, a grand jury has handed down an indictment to Nelson for her alleged role in her son’s killing. She’s been charged with first degree murder, aggravated manslaughter of a child, and aggravated child abuse.

Before this grisly killing, Nelson has only one prior booking in the Volusia County criminal justice system: in March of last year she was charged with grand theft between $750 and $5,000. She posted her $2,500 bond for that offense about four hours after being booked.

Some people don’t have enough brains in their heads to know how to take care of a child. This woman is a perfect example. I hope they lock her up and throw away the key or give her the death sentence. Unfortunately if given the death sentence she will not suffer as much as her son did.
