FLAGLER BEACH – What could’ve been a whole lot worse ultimately stayed small on Monday night, thanks to the quick response of emergency personnel in Flagler Beach. A house fire that was called in shortly after sunset was extinguished minutes later in the middle of a residential neighborhood.

The fire occurred on South Flagler Avenue, on the 2300 block in between South 23rd Street and South 24th Street. It reportedly began in a closet and the residents seemed to have caught it early enough to call the firefighters in short order.

The Flagler Beach Fire Department and Flagler Beach Police Department both responded to the scene, and a notice was put out on social media for residents to avoid South Flagler Ave until the situation was resolved. The quick work of firefighters and police kept the fire contained to the closet and room in which it had originated. All occupants and pets were reported to be unharmed.

In a statement issued after the fire was extinguished, Flagler Beach Police Chief Matt Doughney specifically highlighted the work of Lieutenant Oberst, Driver/Engineer Mullen and Firefighter Strickland for their work in the response.

As of Tuesday morning, the cause of the fire is still under investigation. More information will be released as it’s made available by local emergency personnel.
