Flagler Tax Collector Shelly Edmonson has been sworn in as the District 5 Director of the Florida Tax Collectors Association (FTCA). In this role she’ll work alongside other tax collectors in Florida to address issues facing their officers statewide.
The Florida Tax Collectors Association connects collectors from all 67 counties. Together, they work to advocate for their officers in legislative initiatives and support one another collaboratively.
“I am truly honored to serve as District 5 Director and to represent our district within the Florida Tax Collectors Association,” Edmonson said. “Florida’s Tax Collectors play an important role in providing essential services to our residents. I look forward to working with my fellow Tax Collectors, sharing ideas and advocating for the resources and support our offices need to continue serving our communities effectively.”
Each county in Florida has a tax collector as dictated by the state constitution. The role is deemed a ‘constitutional officer’ alongside four other countywide elected officials: the sheriff, property appraiser, clerk of courts, and elections supervisor.
Each county’s tax collector office fulfills not just its titular role, but also motor vehicle registration, the handling of several different licenses, and the issuance of government documents such as birth certificates. They also process concealed weapons licenses and renewals as well as facilitating voter applications.
Following eight years working in the Flagler County Tax Collector’s Office, Shelly Edmonson was elected tax collector in 2024. She drew no opponent, largely having been touted as heir-apparent to the retiring Suzanne Johnston, her longtime predecessor.
“Our responsibility always comes back to serving the people of Flagler County,” Edmonson continued. “It is an honor to represent our community while working with Tax Collectors across the state to strengthen the services we provide.”
The Florida Tax Collectors Association’s current president is Volusia County Tax Collector Will Roberts. It maintains a first and second vice president, treasurer, secretary, and past president as part of its executive committee. It also has a board of directors consisting of one representative each from 10 districts as well as a series of liaisons and committee chairs.
