The cost of gas in Florida was, for a brief moment, below three dollars per gallon on average according to a report on statewide trends by AAA. On Sunday the average gall of gas in Florida cost $2.93, before rising back up to $3.05 as of Tuesday.
The dip below three dollars is the latest in a trend of lowering costs for Florida – last Sunday, Florida’s gas was listed at $3.09 on average. A month ago, it was $3.53. Florida continues to be moderately cheaper than the national average, which is $3.15 as of Tuesday.
According to AAA spokesperson Mark Jenkins, the decrease in prices stems from concerns of a potential recession caused by the trade policies of the Trump administration. However, developments such as a trade deal between the United States and United Kingdom have evidently restored some confidence in the future demand for gas, causing prices to drift back upward.
“Florida drivers are seeing the lowest gas prices in 17 months,” Jenkins said. “Prices dipped due to fears that the trade war could trigger a recession and reduce fuel demand. However, reports of easing tensions pushed oil prices higher last week, which could result in rising prices at the pump.”
Data from AAA shows Volusia County as having an average gas price of $3.08, compared to $3.04 in Flagler County. The Florida panhandle is by and large experiencing the cheapest gas costs, while South and Central Florida is seeing higher prices.
