27-year-old Oscar Torres, a resident of DeLand, was convicted and sentenced to prison on felony drug trafficking charges on Tuesday. He was tried in a Volusia County court, and ultimately convicted of four different charges.

On top of the decade-and-a-half Torres will have to spend behind bars, he’s also been issued a $107,000 fine. The State Attorney’s Office announced and applauded the result of the trial on Tuesday, with Assistant State Attorneys Daniel Megaro and Elba Roman-Pacheco having led the prosecution.

Torres was arrested on July 14th last year, and initially booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail on charges of trafficking in fentanyl and phenethylamines, possession of cocaine with intent to sell, possession of a structure or vehicle where drugs are manufactured, aggravated assault with a firearm, firing a missile into a dwelling, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He’s been in custody ever since.

In this trial, Torres was convicted of the two drug trafficking charges, the cocaine possession charge, and a charge of paraphernalia possession. He was convicted on Tuesday afternoon, and sentenced to prison by Judge Margaret Hudson.

Even prior to this most recent arrest, Torres has been booked into jail in Volusia County on numerous occasions. Previous charges include robbery, burglary, resisting an officer, possession of amphetamines and cocaine, and discharging a gun in public among several others.

Doesn’t seem that 15 years is long enough, especially with his arrest record. Apparently he has no respect for the law. He also shouldn’t be allowed to get an early release but with our justice system, he will probably be out in 5 for good behavior. IMO he should have gotten 50 yrs. with no parole.
