As frigid temperatures move in over the coming days, a number of destinations will be available in Flagler and Volusia counties for the homeless and those without access to heat. A combination of inclement precipitation and low temperatures in the high 30’s make the shelters necessary as a safety measure for those who’d otherwise be exposed to the elements.
As usual, the primary shelter location in Flagler County will be the Rock Transformation Center, formerly and commonly known as Church on the Rock. The Volusia County government has yet to determine whether a county-run facility will be opening its doors this week, but one volunteer-run location will be open in DeLand.

“We urge those who lack adequate housing or adequate heat for their residences to come to the cold-weather shelter,” said Flagler County Health & Human Services Director Joseph Hegedus. “The Sheltering Tree and the Rock Transformation Center will provide cots and meals. We – Flagler County – will be providing transportation to the shelter for those who need it.”
For those able to travel to the Rock Transformation Center themselves, the address is 2200 N. State St. Transportation will be available for those who can’t at the following bus pickup stations:

In Volusia County, The Neighborhood Center’s The Bridge will be opening its doors between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm on Tuesday. Its facility is located at 421 S. Palmetto Ave, DeLand, and further information can be accessed by calling (386) 734-8120, ext. 601. Those residing in east Volusia County can access shelters organized by local churches by calling Halifax Urban Ministries at (386) 317-5886.
Further information about cold weather shelters in Volusia County will likely be provided by the county via official channels as it becomes available.
